Replacement actuators are now available for the OM642 turbocharger, but it is important to find the correct version.

OM642 Turbocharger Information

The Mercedes OM642 turbocharger uses variable internal vanes, also referred to as a VNT, in order to direct airflow through the turbines which increases or decreases turbocharger pressure. On the OM642 motor the vanes are controlled by an electronic servo motor bolted to the outside of the turbocharger. It is circled in the photo below.

P2510 Fault Code for Component Y77/1

The P2010 code referring to component Y77/1 being faulty is an indication that the turbocharger actuator has failed. The turbocharger actuator is component Y77/1. If your vehicle shows this code then the actuator needs to be replaced. Some vehicles will also show codes for P2359 or P0299- boost pressure too high or too low.

OM642 Actuator Versions

Each vehicle with the OM642 engine came with unique actuator programming and adaptation. Therefore an actuator cannot be pulled from one vehicle and installed in another unless the programming is completely identical. Using an actuator from another model or even year of the same model will cause a fault code and limp mode.

New OM642 Replacement Actuators

Luckily new genuine Garrett replacement OM642 actuators are now available which have a universal calibration and do not require coding or adaptation. In other words these are plug-and-play units.

Genuine units will show Garrett and Hella markings on the plastic housing cover.

Replacing the OM642 Actuator

The actuator on the OM642 turbocharger is bolted to the top of the turbocharger and can easily be seen from the engine bay. It is attached with three small bolts on the backside and a circlip which secures the actuator to the vane lever on the turbocharger. The circlip often breaks or goes flying/dropped/lost so we recommend grabbing an extra circlip just in case.

The whole job can be completed without removing the turbocharger. All that needs to be removed other than the actuator is the intake pipes. Any time the intake pipes are removed it is strongly recommended to replace the OM642 Turbocharger & Intake Seals.
