3.0 Liter TDI Fix Approved

On October 23rd, the EPA approved a deal with VW to fix the 3.0 liter TDIs.

The 3.0L engine is in the following vehicles:

  • 2013-2016 Volkswagen Touareg TDI
  • 2013-2015 Audi Q7 SUVs TDI
  • 2013-2015 Porsche Cayenne Diesel
  • 2014‐2016 Audi A6 quattro TDI
  • 2014‐2016 Audi A7 quattro TDI
  • 2014‐2016 Audi A8, A8L TDI
  • 2014‐2016 Audi Q5 TDI

What does this mean for you?

If you own one of these SUVs, the first thing to note is that VW won’t be buying the car back. VW, as part of the deal, were able to avoid a buyback and save themselves a huge amount of money. In terms of compensation, earlier in the year VW had reached a settlement with the US government that said VW would pay owners who have their vehicles fixed between $8,500 and $17,000.  You also are eligible to receive $1500 from Bosch on top of any money from VW as part of the US government’s settlement with the company for their involvement in the diesel scandal.

The fix varies over the different vehicles, with some vehicles receiving a software fix and others receiving a hardware fix:

Software Fix Only:

  • 2013-2014 Touareg
  • 2015 Audi Q7
  • 2013-2014 Porsche Cayenne

Software & Hardware Fix:

  • 2015 & 2016 Touareg
  • 2015 & 2016 Cayenne
  • 2013-2015 Audis (all)

No word yet on what the effect of the fix will be, or what specifically will change on the emissions system. For the 2.0Ls, the fix actually did not significantly affect mileage.

Quick Visual Aid for Volkswagen 3.0Ls:

Specific information about the fix for 2016 Audis isn’t available. This covers about 38,000 vehicles, and will also extend the emissions warranty on vehicles that receive the fix. More details on the fix are forthcoming. Owners can obtain the fix at their dealership starting on Nov. 6th, 2017.

How long can I wait to submit a claim?

A claim must be submitted by Dec. 31st, 2019.

What about earlier vehicles with the 3.0L TDI?

If you own a 2009-2013 TDI with a 3.0L engine, you can have your vehicle bought back or wait to see what the fix will be. No fix has yet been approved, but you are eligible to receive $7755 to $13,880 if you keep decide to keep your vehicle.
