In a word. Yes.
The DSG or Direct Shift Gearbox is a fully automated manual transmission. Instead of the driver operating the clutch via a pedal the clutch is controlled by a computer. Unlike early automatic transmissions, the DSG transmission is quicker and more efficient than a manual transmission. It also maximizes fuel efficiency and performance. A bonus is the convenience of an automatic transmission. This is even more beneficial in areas with heavy traffic and congestion.

The DSG is a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This is because it consists of two independent gearboxes. The gearboxes are connected alternately through two drive shafts to the engine. One of the gearboxes controls the odd-numbered 1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse synchronizers. The other drives the even-numbered 2nd,4th, and 6th-speed synchronizers. The gears drive a common differential gear. While the driving gear is being driven by one clutch the next gear is pre-selected and ready for engagement. This is all controlled by the Mechatronic unit. This creates faster and smoother shifting, without any reduction in traction. Even the most experienced driver could not perform such an efficient shift on a traditional manual transmission.

VW developed the DSG transmission in 2003. Many other auto manufacturers now use their versions due to their efficiency. Although the names may be different the function and inner workings are the same. BMW refers to it as a DCT transmission. Porsche calls it a PDK. Audi uses the term S-tronic, and Ford calls it a Powershift Gearbox. All of these have the option to be driven in normal or sport mode. Sport mode extends the gears further and downshifts sooner. The gears can also be changed manually.
For those of us who are manual transmission diehards, it may be time to admit it is not due to performance or speed. The DSG has us all beat on that front.
The best and most important way you can extend the life of your DSG transmission, and its components is by performing a DSG fluid service. IDParts has resources like a tutorial video and list of the parts necessary for this procedure.
To make the process simple, IDParts has created starter kits for DSG service:
