We are definitely not the first to report on this, but we are excited all the same. As you likely know, we here at IDParts love our diesels, especially those of the European persuasion. However, while we appreciate our domestic offerings as well, none have excited us quite as much as the 3.0 Duramax, especially in its now second-generation LZ0 configuration. Chevrolet has announced that it is now finally available to order in the Z71 package.

It is one of those engines that really speaks to us in the truest sense of what a diesel engine is supposed to be. It is relatively compact, powerful, and efficient. This means that all trim levels of the Tahoe are now offering this engine, and it is great news. This means if you are anyone from a soccer mom to a full-out adventure junkie, you can reap the benefits of this great engine. Here are a few key highlights of this engine:
- Improved Fuel Economy: The Duramax diesel engine is known for its efficiency. Diesel engines typically have a better fuel economy than their gas counterparts, so this means the Tahoe with the Duramax can go further on a tank of fuel, which is great for long road trips or for those who drive a lot of highways. Some people are even reporting upwards of 30mpg in their Tahoe with this engine, which is just amazing for a full-size body on frame SUV. This is almost double that of some of the gas V8 offerings.
- More Torque: The newest version of the 3.0L Duramax produces a whole lot of torque (about 495 lb-ft). 95% of this is available as early as 1250 rpm, which means you have gobs of power almost right off the get go. This gives the Tahoe a significant boost in towing power, making it more capable when hauling heavy loads, like trailers, boats, or even campers. This is ideal for people who have a family and need to tow but don’t want to get a pickup truck.
- Better Range: Diesel engines generally have a higher energy density, meaning they can go farther before needing to refuel. Because of the great fuel economy, and a 24-gallon fuel tank, highway ranges of over 600 miles per tank are possible. This is perfect for people who drive long distances or go off the beaten path, especially with a large vehicle like the Tahoe.
- Refined Performance: The 3.0L Duramax is a smooth and quiet engine compared to older diesel engines, so it brings the added benefit of being less intrusive while driving—no loud clatter or vibrations. By nature, being an inline, or straight six-cylinder engine, it will run much smoother than a V8 or V6 offering. It makes for a more comfortable ride overall
- Lower Maintenance Costs: Diesel engines often last longer and, over time, can be more reliable if properly maintained. The 3.0L Duramax is known for being durable, meaning fewer trips to the shop over the life of the vehicle. Diesel engines typically last hundreds of thousands of miles, and often have much longer lives than their gas counterparts.
- Emissions Compliance: Diesel engines have come a long way in reducing emissions, and the 3.0L Duramax is cleaner than older diesels, and even some much older gas-powered vehicles. Refinements in engine fuel mapping and high-tech materials used in the catalytic converters and DPFs help keep the tailpipe much cleaner than diesels of the past. It offers a good balance between power, efficiency, and environmental impact, which is a big deal with stricter emissions regulations.
- Enhanced Towing and Off-Roading Performance: Now that this engine is available in the Z71 package, it seems like the perfect fit. The Z71 package is all about rugged off-road capability, and the added power and torque of the 3.0L Duramax will make the Tahoe even better suited for off-road adventures, whether it’s for towing or just for traversing tough terrain.
All in all, the combination of diesel power, efficiency, and ruggedness makes the Z71 Tahoe, as well as all the other models with the 3.0L Duramax a great option for people looking for an all-around capable and practical full-size SUV.
