Diesel fuel additives are designed to prevent engine wear and maintain power and fuel economy. Some include anti-gelling agents for cold-weather climates. They add lubricity (a fuel’s ability to lubricate engine parts), add cetane, and even remove the water from your fuel. There’s no definitive way for any of us to know for sure how accurate any of these claims truly are.
There’s a longstanding debate on this topic. Some say that additives are essential and, without fail, add a product at every fill-up. Others think that the added lubricity isn’t really necessary, stating that most of the effect of these additives is placebo, and that the fuel does a good enough job on its own.
It’s worth considering the highly variable quality of fuel in the US. Cetane content changes from region to region. The introduction of ULSD (ultra-low sulfur diesel) reduced diesel’s natural lubricity. This is due to the refining process used to remove the sulfur. This could cause excess wear on injection components. Depending on your region and season, diesel may have different amounts of anti-gelling agents. Some filling stations may not sell as much diesel, so it could be old, or you could be buying the last of the tank.
Diesel fuel quality is declining throughout the world, and the trend is expected to continue. A recent survey suggests that 70% of diesel fuel sold at service stations does not meet the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard for diesel fuel lubricity. Low sulfur or “dry” fuel has become an expensive problem for diesel owners.

Taking all these factors into account, our position at IDParts is this: if you want to spend the money, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Selected additives do follow through on their claims—they add lubricity, decrease gelling, or add cetane. They can act as insurance, guaranteeing that the fuel in your car has the qualities your car needs. Below, we’ve listed a few products we use and trust.
Stanadyne Performance Formula
This company started way back in the 1800s as a precision machine screw manufacturer, and in the early 1940s started making rotary fuel pumps for diesel engines. They still manufacture rotary pumps but have also expanded to include high-pressure common rail pumps and injectors. As a manufacturer of diesel injection components, they understand the importance of fuel quality. Poor fuel quality can lead to performance issues caused by premature wear or gumming and clogging of components.
Stanadyne Performance Formula protects your diesel engine, and regular use will prevent buildup and corrosion. Stanadyne’s Performance Formula helps protect against excessive wear and corrosion while increasing both power and fuel economy. Performance Formula also helps prevent diesel fuel from gelling in cold weather.
Stanadyne Performance Formula comes in many different packages: half gallons, 8 oz. bottles, and 16 oz. bottles, and has a solid reputation for effectiveness in increasing lubricity and fuel economy.
Liqui Moly
The company Liqui Moly was started in 1957. The rights and patent information for Liqui Moly was purchased. At that time, Liqui Moly was the name of the oil additive MoS2. It had been used by the US Army and Air Force. The liquefied solid was added to the motor oil. It provided emergency running properties in the event of sudden oil loss. Even the pilots in the Second World War made use of this property. MoS2 is still available today.
Today, Liqui Moly is known not only for its lubricants but also for its diesel fuel additives. They offer both cleaners, such as Diesel Purge, and preventatives like Super Diesel Additive and DPF Protector.
Diesel Purge is a cleaner that is added directly to the injection system, typically by filling the fuel filter or housing. It cleans fuel systems and injectors within minutes and restores lost power caused by deposits. Its addition can help to eliminate knocking, pinging, and exhaust smoke. Improves start-up performance. Since this is added directly to the fuel filter housing, we recommend using it when you change your fuel filter.
Super Diesel Additive and DPF Protector are both preventatives. Super Diesel Additive is a combination of additives that clean and maintain the diesel fuel system. Prevents corrosion, increases lubrication, thus reducing fuel pump and injector wear. Increases Cetane value for improved engine performance, easier starting, and lower emissions. Regular use keeps the fuel system in perfect working order. It is added directly to the fuel tank and can be used at every fill-up.
DPF Protector reduces the formation of soot during combustion in the engine. Improves engine performance and emissions control. Reduces clogging of the DPF caused by soot as a combustion product. Added directly to the fuel tank and can be added at every fill-up.
