The 2009-2014 Beetle, Jetta, and Golf TDIs with CBEA and CJAA engines were the first 2.0L TDIs equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). While this improved emissions, it introduced several oxygen and exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors, increasing the chances of check engine lights. Unfortunately, diagnostic codes can be unclear about which sensor is faulty, leading to unnecessary parts replacements.
This guide helps you accurately identify each sensor’s location and ECU reference, so you can replace only what’s needed and clear your check engine light.

Depending on the capabilities of your code reader, you may receive a generic code such as P0544, P0546, P2033, P0135, P0140, P0420, and many more. A more detailed diagnostic program such as VCDS will give you the code with a description, helping you narrow down the location of the sensor. For example VCDS will read code P0544 with the description Sensor 1 for Exhaust Temp Bank 1 (G235), but where is Sensor 1 Bank 1 in the exhaust system?
We created a helpful diagram and sensor kit that will help you find the exact location of each sensor:

In the exhaust system, there is a combination of Oxygen and EGT(Exhaust Gas Temperature) sensors. To make this process easier, we put together a kit with all of the sensors that you will need:

Oxygen Sensors
There are two oxygen sensors, one that is after the DPF and one that is after the catalytic converter.
- Oxygen Sensor After DPF is Before the Catalytic Converter and is referred to in the ECU as “Bank 1 Sensor 1”
- Oxygen Sensor After the Catalytic Converter is referred to in the ECU as “Bank 1 Sensor 2”
EGT Sensors
There are a total of 4 exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors.
- The first EGT sensor is located in the Exhaust manifold of the turbocharger. Since this one is before the actual compressor wheel it is referred to as the “pre-turbo” EGT sensor. The ECU refers to this sensor as “Bank 1 Sensor 1”
- The second EGT sensor is located in the top of DPF, and is also referred to as the post-turbo sensor. The ECU refers to this sensor as “Bank 1 Sensor 2”
- The third EGT sensor is located before the catalytic converter and is referred to in the ECU as “Bank 1 Sensor 3”
- The fourth and final EGT sensor is located after the catalytic converter and is referred to in the ECU as “Bank 1 Sensor 4”
The EGT sensors mainly require a 17mm socket to be removed. Our sensor socket will allow you to remove the sensors and reinstall without cutting wires.

With our sensor replacement kit, you have the ability to pick the exact sensor, or sensors, you need to fix your vehicle. This should remove the aforementioned check engine codes and get your diesel back on the road!
