Determining the correct transmission fluid for your Mercedes can be difficult. Mercedes does not make it a user-friendly experience, and the information is not as readily available as other vehicle manufacturers. Customers often have questions about the correct fluid, and there is conflicting information all over the internet. We have studied the Mercedes charts and compiled a list of the correct ATF for your Mercedes. Here is a link to the site used to determine the correct operating fluids.

From 1981-1996, all Mercedes diesel models had the same 4-speed transmission. Mercedes called this the 4G-Tronic. These were coded 722.3, 722.4, and 722.5. The follow-up for the 4-speed was the 5-speed. This was called the 5G-Tronic. This was coded 722.6. Logically, Mercedes skipped the 6-speed and named the next generation, 7-speed transmission the 7G-Tronic. The ATF fluid for the 7G-Tronic has a 236.14 specification. This fluid is backward compatible with the earlier 5 and 4-speed transmissions. This means you can use the newest version in the oldest car, but not vice versa.

In a mid-year split in 2010, Mercedes models began using a new 7G-Tronic transmission with a low-friction (A89) fluid. This is the 7G-Tronic PLUS transmission. The fluid for this transmission has a 236.15 specification. This fluid is NOT backward compatible.

Sprinters used the 5-speed transmission in their 2.7L OM612, 2.7L OM648, and the 3.0L V6 OM642 until 2018. These are referred to as either a 722.6 or NAG1 transmission and require fluid with the 236.14 specification. Models after 2018 are equipped with the 7-speed, 722.9 transmission, which requires the (A89) low-friction fluid. The smaller 2.1L 4-cyl OM651 used the same 7-speed transmission when it was released in 2014. Sprinter models continued to use the 236.15 fluid until 2022.

The 9G-Tronic

With the newest 2.0L OM654 Sprinter, there is a 9-speed, 9G-Tronic with the transmission code 725.0. The latest transmissions require a 236.17 fluid.
